What ISIS can teach us about sex and human nature.

Okay, not to get political on you, but this came to me at the end of last year, when we all needed a bit of hope...

The fact that there exists regimes, movements and organizations that appear to deal in evil, shadow and darkness is proof that there is also an expanding movement of lightworkers dealing in awareness, life and love. Nature lives in balance so there cannot be one without the other.

Alongside this, is the fact that we too can exist in all of those polarities, if even for just a split-second each day. These polarities may expand to become a way of life, and for many they do, but to suggest that those who choose these extreme paths can be eradicated or promoted is naïve – we are all of these movements, for better or worse; at any given moment we are drawn to and/or repelled from either of them. The practice is to be aware and tread the Middle Way; with permission to exist in either extreme momentarily, with consciousness, with awareness, and consideration of the impact of such swings of movement.

Eventually, the pendulum rests in the Middle. Each impulse sets it in motion first one way, then the other. But rest, availability, and potential are always in the Middle-Centre.

Of course, such regimes touch on and activate our innate sense of fear because they exercise such intolerance and strict restriction. We are brought face to face with death – the possibility of death, the inevitability of death, the injustice, the powerlessness, the crushing of the ego that has prided itself on living how it wants; when and where and how. Our hubris is shattered when the forceful hand of another (especially a human, a brother other) deals with us in this way. In the laws of sin and guilt as written by Man, none of us lives guilt or sin-free all the time and so we are all condemned to die. Our preference would be fast and painless at the end of a long life, but this is not handed out to all. Such regimes call us to account in the now and this terrifies and abhors us (because our ‘crimes’ are minuscule by proportion?)

But what of the opposite of this? What of the balance and harmony in nature? If such abhorrent and unjust immediacy of pain and suffering are manifest and evident in the world today, by the Laws of Nature, it can only do so because there is a growing and thriving movement of life-affirming, liberal, permissive and aware people. There is a strong and growing movement that accepts and promotes the sacredness of life and the joy that liberation brings, regardless of race, religion, culture or creed. More and more people are choosing Life, becoming aware of the interconnectedness of life and the shared virtues of us all. The butterfly that flaps its wings in the Asian rainforest really does create a hurricane in the Americas.

Does this mean we are any less scared of death? I don’t think so. Such evils can push us to embrace living so much more as well as entice us to confront death with more death but this time of our own choosing. Perhaps this is the crux of the matter – if we have choice or power over our ending then we may feel more accepting of our finality? But will we fear it less?

I’m not sure. It brings it closer and under more control (so maybe it won’t happen after-all..?)

I am afraid of ISIS because I am afraid of how I may be treated. I am afraid of the pain and suffering that I may be subjected to. I am afraid of the manner of my death and the feelings and thoughts that may surround it. It’s not my time. It’s never my time. But to be close to death brings more humility and zest and appreciation for life. Safety is over-rated, and I know I may just have or be those tyrannical, despotic behaviors too; because power is the greatest turn-on. And sex and violence have always been united. Short-lived and pleasure seeking, the sympathetic nervous system governs both functions in the body.

I am sure that right across the light and dark spectrum there is a continuum of sexual practices. Perhaps sex is the healthiest way that we can access all these aspects of ourselves too? Sex is the gateway to light and dark. Violence on the other hand (rough and assertive writhing against one another aside) can only exist on the “existent-non-existent” polarity. Dark = violent, Light = non-violent. “Dark Sex or Erotic Play” exists. “Light Sex or Sacred Sex” also exists. If we are mindful and conscious of what we are and what we do, all potentials of life are available to us with minimum destruction, interference or desecration to ourselves and to others.

This is the practice for us. This is the Middle Way. Fluid. Flow. Remembering, knowing what we are.

Be Your Best,

DL.
